Wreckfest Sunday.
One of Old Hank’s favorite songs, a song that is so affecting it can change the arc of a whole day, is Johnny’s “Sunday Morning Coming Down”.
That was the vibe Sunday morning at IX. The bands did their jobs and blew up Saturday night. It went late and if you were that type, it went hard.
So Sunday morning, it came down. At 10 am it was time to make sure batteries were charged and SSD cards were empty, and head on over to the CSC tent at Art Park. It had rained hard in the wee hours of the morning. There were still pretty puddles reflecting soft light — a pink and baby blue sky that inspired the titles in these vids. The air was washed and ready for the day. And once you got going, that Sunday Morning had it’s charms. Good coffee. An egg sando from 3 Notched. Theocles. Orion Redwolf. Steve Lanza Jr. Louis & Ryan. (Forgive us, at times the video is shaky as that Sunday Morning Coming Down. We’re shopping for a gimbal as we speak.)
Somehow, and maybe the organizers planned it this way, the early Sunday artists sensed that the crowd, as it trickled in, was wobbly. So they nursed us along, gave us a a little soul sustenance.
And then Musical Suspects lifted IX on it’s shoulders and danced the whole jam to a more joyful place. Koda & Marie reminded us one more time just how important Jim Waive is to this community and how sad we are to never have known him.
Shagwuf used their raw torque to remind us there is just so very, very much to fight for right now. The Curry’s poured their sweet harmonies all over everything. Disco Risque did their amazing thing one more time.
And then it was over.
Net / Net, Cville’s very first Wreckfest Music Festival was more fun than we knew what to do with, a smashing success, and a massive, ferociously creative body of work by Ryan, DR, IX and the bands that made it so sublime. Thank you all.
Again and again, citizens, we are reminded of how lucky we are to have this musical family in Cville.
Let’s do it again next year!
