Reasons to Wreck: Üga Büga.

Wreckfest is breathing down our necks and we’re continuing to dig into the bands, the sound, and the chaos to get you ready for this first-ever IX Art Park Charlottesville throwdown.

We’ll be there in the Cvillesoundchecklounge©, not just covering the shows, living the whole thing with you. September 20–21.

Now, the next Wreckfest band in focus: Üga Büga.

Before their show at the Southern last Saturday night, Old Hank and I sat down with Calloway, Niko, and Jimmy for a pre-set convo about the band, the state of rock and metal, touring, and what it’s like coming up in the Charlottesville music scene. These guys are a blast to hang out with! Check it out in the vid above.

About a month ago Ms. Bazz and I were at Hogwaller, sipping a beer and crushing a burger when I felt a tap on the shoulder, it was Jimmy.  “Hey, is that a Thrice tattoo on your arm?” He showed me his Thrice tattoo, and just like that, we bonded. Then he tells me he’s in a metal/rock band called Üga Büga, and they’re playing a show at The Southern with a couple other heavy hitters.

Old Hank and I had already heard whispers. Both Calloway (guitar/vox) and Nico (bass / backing  vox) play in Lord Nelson, and we knew Üga Büga was part of the Wreckfest lineup (so is Lord Nelson, BTW).

Of course we procured tix and caught Üga Büga as they ripped up the stage Saturday night at The Southern. They hit clean-up after sets from Diseased Earth (Staunton) and Greenhead (DC). We didn’t make it in time for Diseased Earth, but word is they crushed it. Greenhead straight up slayed with their stoner-doom grooves and haunting melodic vocals.

When Üga Büga took the stage, the anticipation that had been brewing all night just fucking exploded. Calloway ripped into the first riff and it hit like a freight train. Niko’s basslines throbbed like M-80’s going off in your chest, and Jimmy on drums? Just pure, raw propulsion. Tight. Loud. Unrelenting. Get a taste of the show in the vid below.

Üga Büga reminded everyone in that room that rock and roll, real rock and roll, isn’t dead, it’s just been loading up on ammo.

Get your tickets for the whole Wreckfest weekend of great bands at wreckfestcville.com and make sure to get the $5 tickets for after hours party/shows as well – you won’t want to miss that!
